A Sacramento man was sentenced to 51 years to life in prison todayfor fatally stabbing a Fairfield store clerk more than three years ago,Solano County Deputy Public Defender Robert Boyle said.Tommy Joe Thompson was convicted by a jury in March of the first-degree stabbing murder of Dollar Tree store clerk Taneka Talley three years ago.He was sentenced to the maximum term by Judge Donna Stashyn who denied a motion for a new trial, Boyle said.Boyle said Thompson got 25 years to life in prison for the murder but the term was doubled because Thompson had a prior felony conviction. He also got an additional year in jail for use of the knife, Boyle said.Talley, 26, was stabbed at the Fairfield store on March 29, 2006. Testimony during the trial indicated Thompson and his wife Carla entered the discount store on North Texas Street around 9:15 a.m. Thompson stabbed Talley in the heart and was in the store for less then a minute before he fled, according to the testimony.Thompson, 46, and his wife were living in a motel in West Sacramento. Carla Thompson surrendered to police and Thompson was arrested by West Sacramento police late that night.Boyle argued at trial against a first-degree murder conviction, claiming that Deputy District Attorney Dane Neilson didn’t prove the murder was premeditated and the killing was voluntary manslaughter.
