A pipe bomb was discovered during a traffic stop on an off-ramp from southbound Interstate Highway 280 in unincorporated Santa Clara County this morning, prompting the closure of the off-ramp for almost two hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The incident began at about 2:15 a.m. on the off-ramp to Magdalena Avenue from southbound Highway 280, where a deputy from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle, CHP Officer Robert Haven said. A pipe bomb was discovered in the vehicle, according to Haven, who said a bomb squad from the sheriff’s office was requested at the scene. The off-ramp remained closed until about 4 a.m. while the bomb squad dealt with the device, Haven said.
