A 44-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested after an altercation inwhich he allegedly bit a police officer who responded to a disturbance at his home Thursday evening, according to Santa Rosa police.Jerry Kutz was arrested after police received reports at about 6:15 p.m. of a disturbance at his home at 5053 Morocco Ave., police said.Officers heading to the home were advised that Kutz had several warrants for his arrest, including weapons charges, according to police.Two police officers arrived at the home and found Kutz in a field behind the house, where he was standing near a pickup truck that appeared to be stuck in a hole, police said.Kutz held a large rock in one hand and a beer bottle in the other, and the officers ordered him to drop both items. He allegedly refused, and then confronted the officers and resisted their attempts to arrest him, according to police.A struggle ensued and Kutz allegedly bit an officer. One of the officers tried to deploy a Taser, but the device did not operate correctly, police said.As a third officer arrived to assist, Kutz picked up a 3-foot-long ax and tried to use it to escape from the officers.However, a second attempt with a Taser gun was successful, and the officers were able to get the ax away from Kutz and take him into custody, according to police.Kutz was searched and found to be in possession of a controlled substance, police said.The officers received minor injuries as a result of the altercation, including the bite wound. Both officers were treated and released at the scene.Kutz also received minor injuries, and was transported to a local hospital. After being medically cleared at the hospital, he was then taken to the county jail and booked on charges including three outstanding warrants, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, and possession of a controlled substance, according to police.
