A man and his alleged accomplice were arrested early Tuesday morning for allegedly stealing a cell phone from two teens in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box restaurant in San Carlos. The man stole the phone at gunpoint around 1:45 a.m. outside the
restaurant in the 1100 block of El Camino Real, San Carlos police Sgt. Mark Robbins said. After taking the phone, the suspect fled in a white Chevy Suburban, Robbins said. The teens were not injured and reported the crime to San Carlos police, who broadcast a description of the sport utility vehicle to nearby police departments, Robbins said. A short time later, a Belmont police officer spotted the Suburban traveling north on U.S. Highway 101 and pulled it over, Robbins said. San Mateo resident Nizam Azam, 33, who was driving, and his passenger, Hayward resident Jose Landaeta, 20, were arrested. Azam was booked into San Mateo County jail on suspicion of committing robbery and brandishing a deadly weapon, and Landaeta was booked on suspicion of being an accessory to the robbery. Police determined that two other passengers in the car, a 19-year-old man and 17-year-old girl, were not involved and let them go, Robbins said.
