Following a standoff early this morning, Oakland police arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting two sisters who were found dead in a hotel room Monday, police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said. Police received a call around midnight from someone who said Curtis Jason Powell, 28, is the man who killed Geraldine Latchison, 23, and Angel Latchison, 20, and that he was at a house in the 1000 block of 16th Street, Thomason said. Officers found the claim to be valid and set up a perimeter around the house. Police called a SWAT unit around 1:30 a.m. when they discovered people were inside, he said. A hostage negotiator talked to Powell, who initially told police he was someone else, for more than an hour until he surrendered. Thomason said police believed Powell had weapons inside the home and a woman and a 4-year-old child were also inside. After Powell surrendered, the child and the woman were found safe. The Latchison sisters were found at the Value Inn at 370 W. MacArthur Blvd. at 11 p.m. Monday after the manager reported the shooting.
