A 47-year-old Rio Vista man who was fatally shot in a hospital emergency room in Martinez this morning has been identified as Paul Hammond by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Hammond had walked into the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center complaining of chest pains. While he was being treated, he allegedly brandished a knife at the nurses. Deputies, who were on duty at the hospital, were called to assist. Hammond was shot at about 2:10 a.m. after threatening the deputies, who repeatedly told him to put the knife down, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Hammond was pronounced dead at the hospital, located at 2500 Alhambra Ave. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Two deputies who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. The sheriff’s office, the Martinez Police Department, and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
