* Novato Man Edward John Schaefer Delays Entering Plea To Killing Melodie Osheroff While Alleged DUI

The Novato man charged with the murder of a 9-year-old girl he struck with his motorcycle while allegedly driving drunk delayed entering pleas this morning in Marin County Superior Court.Edward John Schaefer, 43, will appear in court again June 19, Deputy District Attorney Geoff Iida said. Schaefer is charged with murder, DUI, mayhem and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and with gross negligence. He is being held in the Marin County jail under $1.5 million bail.The Marin County District Attorney’s Office said Schaefer has six prior DUI convictions.Novato police said Schaefer was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle while intoxicated on San Marin Drive in Novato Wednesday when he struck Melodie Osheroff and her father Aaron Osheroff, 41, both of Novato. The father and daughter were crossing San Marin Drive at San Carlos Way in a crosswalk when they were struck. Novato police said Schaefer was speeding and drove through a stop sign. Iida said his blood alcohol level was 0.16 percent, twice the level considered intoxicated.Melodie Osheroff died at Children’s Hospital in Oakland and Aaron Osheroff remains in serious condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Authorities said one of his legs was amputated. The mayhem charge against Schaefer applies to the loss of Aaron Osheroff’s leg.Schaefer suffered moderate injuries in the 8:45 p.m. crash and was in Marin General Hospital before he was transferred to the jail Monday around noon.
