* Monterey Co. Shawna Allen Pleaded Guilty For Fatal DUI Collision Killing Aurelio Perez-Garcia

A 35-year-old woman was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison for driving while intoxicated and killing a 37-year-old man in January 2008 in unincorporated Monterey County near Manzanita Regional Park, Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced Friday.Shawna Ann Allen pleaded guilty on April 2 to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with a collision that killed Aurelio Perez-Garcia on Jan. 13, 2008, according to the district attorney’s office.On that morning, Allen drove from her Prunedale home after having consumed alcoholic beverages, and witnesses reported seeing her traveling west on Castroville Boulevard at speeds approaching 60 to 80 mph, according to the district attorney’s office.As Allen approached the intersection of Castroville Boulevard and Paradise Road, she lost control of her vehicle and collided with a vehicle driven by Perez-Garcia, a Salinas Resident with an 11-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.Perez-Garcia was killed in the collision, while his brother was injured, according to the district attorney’s office.Allen’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was measured at 0.12, which is 1.5 times the legal limit.At the sentencing hearing, four members of Perez-Garcia’s family took turns describing the victim, including his widow, brother, sister, and a school volunteer who has worked with the victim’s children since his death, according to the district attorney’s office.Judge Larry Hayes sentenced Allen to six years in state prison.
