Jurors today convicted Joseph Melcher, 27, of three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder for two separate shootings in San Francisco in 2006.The jury, however, found allegations the shootings were hate crimes to be not true.On Aug. 27, Melcher shot 21-year-old Robert Stanford in the city’s Portola district. He also shot Stanford’s 16-year-old friend, who survived. On Oct. 21, Melcher walked into the Flow bar on Post Street at about 9:15 p.m. and shot a 34-year-old woman, Song Sun Lee of San Bruno, twice in the back of the head, killing her. He also shot a female bartender, who survived, and then walked out to Peace Plaza and shot 22-year-old Kam Yan Li, of San Francisco, fatally wounding him.All of the victims were of Asian descent. Melcher lived in the Los Angeles area at the time but reportedly had family in the Bay Area.He now faces life in prison without parole.

I think Joseph Melcher should get the death penalty but Kamela Harris is not strick enough to allow it. I know views towards death penalties have changed alot in the last couple of decades but when it happens to your son!!!!! try and turn the other cheek! You will see the pain it causes and the lasting hurting memories families have to endure.

i knew this gentleman personally from middle and high school he wasnt a perfect kid crap alot of us werent either but he kind of standed out more than most kids i knew at that time and somewhere along the line i knew he was either destined to die at a young age or spend the last of his life in jail and sadly enough to say drugs played a strong role poisoning at that time young joey melchers life. this is not a hate crime i know because im asian and at a short time in my life joseph melcher was once my friend. several years ago at a dmv i accidently ran into joseph and who i saw was an attractive looking asian girl who he introduced to me as his girlfriend, but all this is still unexcusable and a senseless killing i feel joseph deserves to spend his life in jail so he is reminded everyday until he dies for what he has done and how many lives he destroyed dead and alive. to the family and friends of the lost ones i send you my condolences.

Was Joey Melcher ever at Hillcrest Juvenile Hall?
Was he ever evaluated by Dr. William Ayres – the child psychiatrist who treated many juveniles who was arrested for molesting many young boys sent to him for therapy?

I also knew Joey Melcher in junior high and high school. Yes, he had been to Hillcrest Juvenile Hall. We both went to the probation school there. I was a sophomore and he would’ve been in 8th grade because he was in 6th when I was in 8th. A couple years later he had become friend’s with a good friend of mine, and she made it seem like he cleaned up. I remember reading about this and being like, I know a Joey Melcher from Redwood City who would be about 27 now… I can’t believe that he did this, I mean, what could possibly have caused this? I didn’t even know there was a first murder and attempted murder, I just knew about the bar in Japantown! I thought I heard he was caught in a getaway car, so I thought (remembering him as being one of those kids who tried to hard, especially with the older “cool” kids like us) that maybe it was some bizarre gang initiation, but this? He must have some real mental problems to go off and do this on two separate incidents!
