A Monte Rio man was held to answer to the murder of his lover after a preliminary hearing Monday in Sonoma County Superior Court.Bret Matz, 47, is charged with killing 46-year-old Robert Guess by hitting him in the head with a lamp in their Middle Terrace Road home on Jan. 2.Matz went to a boutique near his home and said he killed his roommate, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said. The business owner then called the Monte Rio Fire Department.Fire department personnel saw Matz leaning over a guardrail on Middle Terrace Road and Matz allegedly told them he killed his roommate, the sheriff’s department said. Fire personnel found Guess’s body in a bedroom of the home.Matz was previously arrested in September on suspicion of assaulting Guess. His trial was scheduled for December but the case was dismissed when Guess refused to cooperate and let a restraining order expire, according to court records.Matz is being held in the Sonoma County jail on the murder charge. He is scheduled to reenter pleas and have a trial date set on April 28.
