San Francisco police officers on Friday broke up an apparent gang initiation ceremony in the Mission district, police said today.Plainclothes officers interrupted about 30 people, including suspected Norteno gang members, who were gathered shortly after midnight Friday in the middle of Utah Street near 25th Street, according to police. The area is just east of the city’s gang injunction area against the Nortenos, which extends west from Potrero Avenue.A scuffle broke out in the crowd, indicating to police a common Norteno gang initiation in which an aspiring gang member is “jumped.”Officers then detained nine people, including the alleged initiate, an 18-year-old San Francisco man who suffered a cut nose and a swollen eye, police said.Jeffrey Almengor, 19, of San Francisco, was booked for possession of a firearm allegedly found in his car, which was parked nearby, according
to police.
