Authorities today identified a man who died Wednesday night in a solo motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco as 23-year-old James Gavel, of Daly City. The crash happened around 8:25 p.m. just south of 10th Street, near the Interstate Highway 80 connector, according to CHP spokesman Shawn Chase.Chase said speed was a likely factor in the crash, as Gavel reportedly failed to navigate a sharp turn as he traveled south on the highway.”It appears he was going too fast and he came around the sweeping right turn there and collided with the guard rail,” Chase said. Gavel was thrown from his 2009 Harley Davidson off the freeway and down about 50 feet onto the pavement below, Chase said.He landed in a Caltrans parking lot at San Bruno Avenue and 15th Street, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chase.
