Livermore police are investigating two separate suspicious child deaths that occurred in the past week resulting in the arrests of two women. The most recent case occurred early Saturday morning, when 54-year-old Mary Downing notified police that her fiance’s 23-month-old granddaughter, whom she was caring for, was unresponsive. Officers called to the 2100 block of Percheron Road found the girl had injuries consistent with severe physical abuse, according to Livermore police. The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland for treatment, but she died Monday, police said.Downing’s statement to police Saturday about how the child received her injuries seemed inconsistent with the injuries officers saw, police said.Downing has been arrested for murder and assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury, though an autopsy is pending and the Alameda County coroner’s bureau has yet to rule the death a homicide, according to police. The second case took place Thursday, when Livermore police were called to a home in the 1900 block of Spruce Street at about 5 a.m.Officers found an unresponsive 2-month-old boy and administered CPR, but the child died at Valley Care Hospital, police said. The child’s mother, Jessica Adams, 24, was arrested for violating her parole by being under the influence of narcotics, according to police.Police are calling the boy’s death suspicious, but the coroner’s bureau has not ruled this case a homicide and is waiting for the results of further, post-autopsy tests.Police said Adams is cooperating with police in the investigation.
