A woman who crashed her off-road motorcycle into a tree on Bethel Island Tuesday afternoon died from her injuries later that evening, California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Maguire confirmed today.Mary Williams, a 54-year-old Bethel Island resident, had been driving at a high rate of speed when she crashed her bike on Riverview Drive at about 4:40 p.m., Maguire said.”According to witnesses, she was using the area as her personal racetrack,” Maguire said. She suffered major head injuries and was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she later died.Maguire said Williams was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and that alcohol appears to have been a factor.Williams was the second person this week to be killed in an off-road motorcycle crash. The first was 17-year-old Martinez resident Eric Elford who crashed his bike into another off-road motorcycle on a narrow levee dirt path about half a mile north of Waterfront Road in Martinez late Monday night.Elford was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old passenger on Elford’s bike sustained moderate injuries and 19-year-old driver of the second bike sustained minor injuries, Martinez police said.Neither of the dirt bikes had lights and police said after the crash they believed the teenagers had been drinking.
