*Monterey Co. 44-Year-Old Man Found Guilty Of Torturing, Threatening Wife Of 20 Years

A 44-year-old man accused of torturing and abusing his wife during their 20-year marriage was found guilty by a jury in Monterey County Superior Court this week, according to the District Attorney’s Office.Aniano Olea faces 47 years to life in prison after a nine-woman, three-man jury found him guilty Monday of two counts of torture, three counts of mayhem, 12 counts of spousal beating, four counts of criminal threats, stalking, dissuasion of a witness and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.Olea mentally and physically abused his wife during their lengthy marriage, keeping track of her with GPS equipment, disabling her vehicle, submitting her to polygraph testing and recording her phone conversations, according to the district attorney’s office.He was found guilty of hitting his wife’s foot with a mallet, holding a branding iron to her face and burning her cheek with heated barbecue tongs, according to the district attorney’s office.Olea’s wife then broke down from her husband’s pressure in June 2007, and cut off her own finger.The woman was able to escape her husband in July 2007 and was assisted by two off-duty sheriff’s deputies, the district attorney’s office reported.The woman and her daughter now live outside Monterey County.Olea’s trial lasted about four weeks before the jury returned guilty verdicts against Olea. His sentencing date has not been set, according to the district attorney’s office.
